The Queen's Baton relay arrived on the Gilmorehill Campus on Monday 21 July as the University and the City of Glasgow geared up for the XX Commonwealth Games.

Dr Des Gilmore with baton on Campus July 21 2014It was carried through the Main Gate at just before 1100 by Dr Des Gilmore (School of Life Sciences).  Des followed a route along the North side of the Gilbert Scott building and up into the quadrangles and cloisters. There were sizeable crowds watching the Hillhead and Woodlands stages of the relay on what was Day 38 of its progress around Scotland.

Des arrived at the University of Glasgow in 1972, four years after leaving his native New Zealand.  He graduated in Zoology there from the University of Canterbury in Christchurch and then moved to London and later Massachusetts on Research scholarships.

It was for his involvement with athletics both as a runner and an official that saw him nominated to become a baton bearer for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.   Being a committed sportsman he spends much of  his free-time helping out with the University Hares & Hounds University Running Club who originally nominated Des for his hard work.

The University's other baton carriers have been Chris Clarke, a student and Captain of the Hare and Hounds club, and also music student Emma McNally.
