The University’s safety team have issued their festive advice about your office Christmas decorations.  You are welcome to add a seasonal touch…but here are some tips about keeping you and your friends and colleagues safe. These simple fire safety guidelines are from Andy Mackay, the University’s Fire Safety Manager.

  1. Ensure decorations are flame retardant: Decorations and artificial trees displayed must be made with flame retardant materials or treated with a flame retardant application.
  2. Choose a safe location: Make sure you don’t block any escape routes, fire exits or stairs with decorations and Christmas trees.
  3. Keep decorations away from light fittings: Any decorations, cards or Christmas trees should not be placed near light fittings. Keep them away from anything which could potentially cause a fire.
  4. Only use low voltage lights on Christmas trees: Decorative lights should only be displayed on Christmas trees. Ensure the lights used are low voltage. -Please note: the use of mains powered decorative lights should be avoided – It is strongly recommended to replace existing 240v light sets with the reduced voltage type that incorporate a ‘plug in’ transformer. All lights must be inspected by a competent person before use on University premises.
  5. No candles: Don’t use any lit candles, tea-lights or any naked flames.
  6. Avoid flammable materials: Decorations made out of highly flammable Materials should not be used. This includes cotton wool, crepe paper and polystyrene.
