Language Centre Library
The Language Centre Library supports language learning and teaching within the University. Its facilities are available free to all staff and matriculated students. We specialise in languages taught by the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, Celtic, and English as a Foreign Language:

There is also material in over 30 other languages, ranging from Albanian to Xhosa.
The Library is located on Level 1 of the Hetherington Building (see our How to find us page). For further information, see below.
Library Borrowing and Return Service 21 & 22 May
Due to an upgrade, the Library Circulation System (for issue and return of library material) will not be available after 2.00pm on Monday 21 until approx. 12.00pm on Tuesday 22 May. This will also affect the self-issue terminal. You will be able to borrow and return material each morning.
Library Information
Evening opening will finish on Thursday 24 May. Summer vacation opening hours (see below) will continue until Friday 14 September. Please note the Library will be closed on 5 & 6 June and 16 July.

*NOTE: these hours may be altered due to unforeseen circumstances. Any alterations to opening hours will be displayed on noticeboards in the library and posted on this website.
Access to the library is free to:
- all matriculated students
- students of taking language courses in Adult & Continuing Education
- University staff
Recent graduates of University of Glasgow (within the last 12 months) may join for £20.00 on production of their General Council membership.
External Membership Fees

To apply for membership please: complete the Membership Form (see below) and bring it to the library. Payment may be made by cash or cheque only. Please bring proof of your current address e.g. bank statement, utility bill, lease agreement. Library cards are normally ready within two working days.

Borrowing
Most material may be borrowed for one week and may be renewed for a maximum of five times.
- Material which is in heavy demand is put into the Short Loan Collection. Short Loan items are due for return the following working day before 12:00am and may not be renewed.
- Some material e.g. dictionaries and grammar books are available only for use in the library.
- Items are lent on the understanding that the borrower accepts responsibility for their return on-time and in good condition. The cost of replacing damaged or lost items will be charged to the borrower.
Books can be borrowed using the self-issue machine. Other items may only be borrowed from the staff at the counter.
Renewing
Items may be renewed for a maximum of five times in the following ways:
- in person: at the Language Centre Library or the main University Library
- over the internet: go to the main Library website (www.lib.gla.ac.uk) then log-in to your account at the bottom of the left-hand menu
- by email: to lc-librarian@arts.gla.ac.uk giving your full name, student number or barcode number on your library card and the title of each item you wish to renew. You will receive a confirmation email of renewal along with the new due date.
- by phone: 0141 330 4117 giving your full name, barcode number of library card and title of each item you wish to renew. Requests left on the answering machine will be dealt with as quickly as possible and will be backdated when appropriate. Please speak clearly and leave a contact number.
Returning
Items should be returned to the library counter or to the return bin in the main entrance area to the Hetherington Building at the bottom of the stairs. When the Hetherington Building is closed, items may be returned to Lending Services at the University Library on Hillhead Street. Please do not leave items on the counter when there are no staff present.
Fines
Library users should return all items on time as fines are charged for the late return. The Language Centre Library applies the same fines used by the main University Library (for the full list see Library Fines & Charges):
- Overdue regular loans - 5p per day, increasing to 20p per day after 7 days - to a maximum of £5.00
- Overdue short loans - 50p per hour - to a maximum of £10.00
- Recalled items - 20p per day, increasing to 35p per day after 7 days - to a maximun of £5.00
Fines can also be paid at the University Library.

Audio-Visual Facilities
The library has the following audio-visual equipment:
- 16 televisions with Foreign TV Channels
- 6 multi-region DVD players
- 10 VHS video players
- 8 cassette playback machines
- 4 computers

- switch off your mobile phones
- if you want to talk, use the student common room on Level 1 of the Hetherington Building
To protect our material and electrical equipment (and yourselves!):
- do not eat or drink (although bottled water is allowed)
- do not write in any books: if you do you will be charged for a replacement; if you find writing in any item you have borrowed, show the librarian as soon as you borrow it.
