JRS (Eduroam) information for visitors to Glasgow University

Requirements: You will need an Eduroam ID and password from your home institution to access this service.

Availability

flexible network access The JRS (wireless) service is available in the same locations as Flexible Access and is indicated by signs. See also the list of Wireless hotspots

  • The SSID for the wireless network is broadcast as eduroam.   
  • The network access method is IEEE 802.1x using your "home" institution username and password.

Visitors may need to use their home institutions instructions and user name.

It is your responsibility to take steps to ensure that you maintain your own data protection and privacy.
You should discuss this with and receive guidance from your home site.

Depending on the facilities offered by your home network, you perhaps may use a VPN to secure traffic; alternatively you may already deploy secure methods such as HTTPS (SSL) VPNs or secure web pages for email (or perhaps other secure protocols such as SSH). You should be aware that any data traffic which is 'in the clear' is potentially visible to others with the right kind of software unless you take precautions.

Once you have accessed the University's flexible access network and authenticated, the policy for access is that you may use only the following set of protocols:

  • HTTP, HTTPS, web proxy, ICMP (Echo, Echo-reply, Source-quench, Time-exceeded)
  • SSH, Cisco VPN, Microsoft VPN, BGMP, Lotus Note, PPTP, GRE, AHP, ESP
