Girling Feminism: Towards a Feminist Theory of Girlhood

Date: Tuesday 14 May, 2019
Venue: Yudowitz Room, Wolfson Medical School Building, University of Glasgow, University Avenue, Glasgow, G12 8QQ

A conference hosted by the Girlhood Gang

Feminist practices (including feminist theory) are still dominated by adult models of subjectivity presumed to be the endpoint of a naturalized process of developing individual identity that relegates a vast range of not only people but roles, behaviours, and practices to its immature past

(Driscoll 2002, p.9)‌‌

There has been an explosion in girls studies work in the academy over the last decade. While scholars in the field have made important inroads in the theorising of girlhood, much work remains to be done.

This one-day symposium is supported by the BSA Postgraduate Forum and has been designed around theorising girlhood sociologically and will involve speakers, workshops and discussion from academics across the UK working in the field.

Invited speakers include:

Professor Jessica Ringrose – University College London

Professor Lisa McDaid – University of Glasgow

Dr Phillippa Wiseman – University of Glasgow

Dr Geetha Marcus – University of Glasgow

Dr Victoria Cann – University of East Anglia

Dr Susan Batchelor – University of Glasgow

The day will also include discussion groups and workshops.  A full programme will be available in the coming weeks.

Register here: £5 BSA members, £15 for others. It will run from 10.00am (registration from 9.30am) until 5pm. Lunch will be provided.
