Abstract

Topological data analysis (TDA) is a field which has emerged over the past couple of decades, applying topological methods to analysing large data sets. In this talk I will describe one particular method, called Mapper, invented by Singh, Memoli, and Carlsson in 2007. I will also go through its application to a breast cancer data set, where it found a new subgroup of breast cancers.

Those interested in more details can look at the paper "Topology based data analysis identifies a subgroup of breast cancers with a unique mutational profile and excellent survival" by Nicolau, Levine, and Carlsson.
