Abstract

Locally symmetric spaces are spaces with very special geometry arising from their construction as double quotients of Lie groups. Spectral theory for noncompact Hermitian locally symmetric spaces is of interest because of its relationship to the Geometric Langlands program, which is a mathematical program linking number theory, analysis, algebra and topology. This talk will introduce the geometry and topology of locally symmetric spaces and will also explain recent work by the speaker and D. Grieser towards developing an appropriate pseudodifferential operator calculus for studying spectral properties of geometric operators over them.
