Abstract

Rates of decay of energy for damped wave equations can be obtained by studying the behaviour of the resolvent of an operator which generates a one-parameter semigroup of operators on a Hilbert space.  The semigroup measures the energy and one can deduce the rate of decay by a variety of methods.  This talk will describe some of those methods, so it will concentrate on operator theory and function theory.
