Abstract

The connection between determinants and K-theory was first noticed by Deligne. Determinants of complexes in derived categories had been considered before by Knudsen and Mumford in their work on the projectivization of the moduli space of stable curves. More recently there has been much interest in recovering K-theory out of derived categories, with positive results by Neeman and negative results by Schlichting. In the first part of the talk we survey about what is known about this interesting topic, which is halfway between algebra, geometry and topology. Then we present new results and very explicit examples in joint works with Raptis, Tonks, and Witte.
