Nil groups in algebraic K-theory

Abstract

The contribution of nilpotent matrices to algebraic K-theory of rings has been a mystery and a stumbling block for the classification of manifolds. I will describe some recent progress, especially for group rings where the group maps epimorphically to the infinite dihedral group.
