Abstract

Classification is a central theme in mathematics. It has driven some of the most exciting developments of the 20th century, and is particularly prominent in the theory of operator algebras. The Elliott programme seeks classification of simple, separable, nuclear C*-algebras by means of K-theoretical data. Following remarkable success over the last twenty years, it has recently enjoyed a resurgence as a compelling area of research. This talk aims to be an accessible introduction to the Elliott programme and comes with the standard promise that there will be no epsilons or deltas. We will also exhibit a new algebra that we hope will play some future role in the classification of so-called stably projectionless C*-algebras.
