Abstract

When the KP hierarchy construction is repeated, mutatis mutandi, with the quaternions in place of the complex numbers, one obtains the Davey Stewartson II hierarchy. I will explain why this plays an important role in understanding the set of all conformal immersions of 2-tori into the 4-sphere. My emphasis will be on understanding solutions ``of finite type'', i.e., where the Dirac operator of the theory has a finite genus ``spectral curve''.
