Infinite Smith groups and Kropholler's hierarchy

Abstract
In the 1930's, P A Smith proved very strong fixed-point theorems for actions of finite groups of prime power order. We construct an infinite group with similar properties. I will explain some aspects of the construction of our group. If time permits, I will explain how the same construction can be used to shed new light on Kropholler's hierarchy of groups.
