Modelling ciliary and flagellate flows

Abstract

Biomicrofluidic flows induced by cilia and flagella are ubiquitous. In reproduction, the beating sperm flagellum drives the male gamete up the female reproductive tract, while cilia assist in the transport of the egg and its surrounding milieu in the opposite direction. In development primary cilia in the embryonic node have been implicated in invoking fluid flows that induce left-right symmetry breaking. In the lung cilia are also responsible for airway surface liquid homeostasis. In this talk we will review such biological scenarios, exploring scientific questions which are amenable to a mathematical and computational modelling study.
