Meet our LLBs

Some of our graduates from the Scots Law LLB programme share their experiences of studying at Glasgow.

Lucy Hennessy

I thoroughly enjoyed my time studying law at Glasgow University. Glasgow is a really vibrant and friendly city to live and study in. I’ve made life long friends here and had many wonderful opportunities made possible through the University.

During my third year, I took the opportunity to study abroad and moved to Stockholm for a year- I thought Glasgow was great for offering opportunities for international mobility and the professors and Go Abroad team were very positive and encouraging regarding studying abroad. My international opportunities throughout uni also led me to gain a Gold GoGlobal award in my final year.

In my final year, the pandemic had a clear impact on teaching and learning and it was difficult to connect with other classmates and professors. Although my courses were still very interesting and I found the United Nations course very engaging considering it was completed online.

Overall, I’ve had a great time at Glasgow and I’m very grateful to the University staff for their help and support over the years.

My experience of the Scots Law LLB at the University of Glasgow has been extremely positive. I was drawn to the university for its reputation as the top university for law in Scotland and its iconic main campus which is situated in the West End of the vibrant city of Glasgow. My hopes were certainly not disappointed. The quality of teaching at Glasgow is excellent: not only do teaching staff have a deep understanding of their respective subjects, but they are also approachable, allowing students to seek further support if necessary. Moreover, many lecturers are leaders in their area of law, and their passion for their subject is often contagious.

Although the workload was at times significant, knowing that it was both developing me as an individual and providing an opportunity to gain a highly respected degree was a constant motivator. From first year to fourth, I have been highly satisfied with the quality of courses available, of which there is a wide array. The choice of a wide range of courses has not only allowed me to gain an understanding of many areas of Scots law, but as I progressed to Honours courses, it allowed me to find my passion and focus my studies on various commercial law-based subjects.

One thing that has stood out to me in particular is the amount of support available to students. Each law student is assigned a member of staff known as an advisor of studies which has been an invaluable source of advice and support for me. Moreover, the Employability Team host a range of events and provide extensive resources for students aimed at enhancing their employment prospects. It is through developing the knowledge and skills at such events that I have secured a training contract, making me one step closer to achieving my goals.

Your time at Glasgow is truly what you make of it. The quality of teaching, support and the endless opportunities available has significantly developed me as an individual and, most importantly, has allowed me to feel confident and excited about the future.

My LLB degree from the University of Glasgow provided me with the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed in my postgraduate studies, in addition to giving me the motivation and confidence to pursue a doctorate within the area of law I first began researching for my undergraduate dissertation.

As the outgoing President of the European Law Students’ Association on campus, I can also speak highly of the support and enthusiasm with which the School of Law at Glasgow approaches and cares for its student community and the societies at the centre of this community. The School’s investment in the personal, academic, and career development of its students is invaluable.
