Biography
Sandy was educated in Dumfries at St Ninians Primary, Maxwelltown High School and Dumfries Academy. He gained a B.Sc. (Hons.) and Post Graduate Certificate in Education in Physical Education & Sports Science from Lougborough University in 1982/3 and taught in various state secondary schools.
In 1986 he took a M.Sc. in Community Medicine at Manchester University and subsequently took up health promotion specialist posts in Manchester in dealing with problem drug misuse and developing health promotion in primary care. He took up his first higher education post in 1991 as a Lecturer in Health Studies at Manchester Metropolitan University.
He subsequent became a Lecturer in Public Health & Health Promotion in the Department of Public Health, Manchester University (1992-1997). In 1997 Sandy moved back to Dumfries, becoming a Research Specialist within the national health education organisation, The Health Education Board for Scotland. In 1999 he became a Senior Lecturer in Health Studies at St Martins College, Lancaster.

Current research projects:
- Production of evidence based briefing papers Physical Activity and Health Alliance (2006-2007) Scottish Physical Activity and Health Alliance
- Development of a Physical Activity Policy maze (2007) Health Scotland
- An international benchmarking exercise to identify those countries that are considered to be examples of best Physical Activity training practice (2006-2007) Health Scotland
Sandy has had experience in commissioning, managing and undertaking a range of research projects, for example:
