Iain McInnes appointed Vice Principal & Head of College

Institute of Infection, Immunity & Inflammation Director Professor Iain McInnes CBE has been appointed to a new strategic leadership position within the University of Glasgow.

The University has announced that Institute Director Professor Iain McInnes CBE has been appointed to a new strategic leadership position.

Professor McInnes, a world-renowned arthritis expert, the Muirhead Chair of Medicine, and the Versus Arthritis Professor of Rheumatology, succeeds Professor Dame Anna Dominiczak as Vice Principal and Head of the College of MVLS.

Recipient of the Sir James Black Prize Medal in 2016 and the Carol Nachman Prize for Rheumatology 2019, he also received a CBE for his services to medicine in 2019.

A Fellow of both the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Academy of Medical Sciences, Prof McInnes has also served as the Director of the Versus Arthritis Centre of Excellence for Rheumatoid Arthritis for the last five years.

Principal Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli said: "I am delighted to announce the senior leadership appointment of Professor Iain McInnes CBE as Vice Principal & Head of the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences (MVLS).

"Professor McInnes is currently Director of the Institute for Infection, Immunity and Inflammation, as well as the Muirhead Chair of Medicine and the Versus Arthritis Professor of Rheumatology.

"He has been widely published, and his work has been hugely influential in driving new approaches and treatments for inflammatory diseases.

"Over two decades, he has led numerous clinical trials and pathogenesis investigation programmes in inflammatory arthritis at the international level.

"Professor McInnes succeeds Professor Dame Anna Dominiczak, Vice Principal and Head of the College of MVLS from 2010 until August 2020."

Professor McInnes added: “I am delighted and honoured to be taking up this prestigious position within the University of Glasgow.

"I am passionate about the breadth and depth of the incredible world-leading research work that takes place in MVLS, alongside the internationally-recognised teaching we do across our schools.

"I look forward to working with colleagues across the College and University to further enhance and build on our world changing reputation.”   

Reflecting on his time with the Institute, he added: "I would like to express my most sincere thanks to everyone in the Institute for their support over the years.  

"I enjoyed an amazing decade spent with amazing people unravelling infection and immune biology to great effect to the benefit of so many people here and beyond."
