SoE Professor Picks Up Prestigious Moral Education Prize

Professor James C Conroy receives 2023 Kuhmerker Career Award in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the field

The Association for Moral Education has conferred the 2023 Kuhmerker Career Award on School of Education Professor of Religious and Philosophical Education James C Conroy.

The prestigious award recognises exceptional individuals who have made outstanding, long-term scholarly contributions that have made a significant impact on the fields of moral psychology, philosophy, or education, or civic or values development.

Previous winners have included Helen Haste, Lawrence Kohlberg, Bob Selman, Wolfgang Edelstein, and Mary Brabeck, as well as many other leading figures in the fields of philosophical, psychological and educational research.

The winner was announced at the 49th Association for Moral Education Conference held at Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, USA on October 26-28, 2023. During the conference, Professor Conroy accepted a plaque commemorating the occasion.

In addition to his current role in the St Andrews Foundation for Catholic Teacher Education, Professor Conroy is also Director of the European Centre for Advanced Studies. He is Vice Principal Emeritus at the University of Glasgow and has previously served as Vice Principal of Internationalisation, Dean for Global Engagement for Europe, and International Lead for the College of Social Sciences. Professor Conroy has published extensively in the areas of philosophy of education, religion, education, and liberal democracy.
