Biography

Dr Kathryn Lowe is a Senior Lecturer in English Language. She was on Leverhulme-funded research leave for Lent and Easter terms 2002, and was also Snell Visitor at Balliol College, Oxford.She spent a previous sabbatical year (1997- 98) as Munby Fellow in Bibliography at the University of Cambridge. Dr Lowe is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries

Her teaching interests include Old and Middle English language and literature, Old Icelandic, history of the English language, and manuscript studies.

Dr Lowe is currently working on a new edition of the Anglo-Saxon charters of Bury St Edmunds. This volume is to form part of the Anglo-Saxon Charters Series, a project published by Oxford University Press and sponsored jointly by the British Academy and Royal Historical Society. She is responsible for producing the editions and translations of the charters themselves together with related discussion on language, the archive and its textual transmission. Prof. Sarah Foot (Oxford) is writing the historical analysis and commentary to the edition.

Dr Lowe is author of many articles on Old and Middle English language and literature, with a focus and on the transition from Old to Middle English. Her principal research interests are in Old English language, textual transmission, charter studies and the history of literacy. She was consultant on documentary materials to the  Linguistic Atlas of Early Middle English(principal author: M. Laing), and Section Editor for Medieval Literature of the Routledge Annotated Bibliography of English Studies.

Dr Lowe was Director of the Glasgow Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies 1998-2010.

She is on the Council of the Viking Society for Northern Research and is on the Advisory Board of the International Society of Anglo-Saxonists.

Dr Lowe delivered one of the Lieftinck Lectures (Leiden) in 2012, and has given keynote addresses at international conferences in Poland (Medieval English Studies Symposium, 2007), Spain (Spanish Society for Medieval English Language and Literature, 2011), and Norway (Writing Europe, 2012). She was sole respondent at the launch of the AHRC-funded project “The Production and Use of English Manuscripts 1066 to 1220” (2010).

Dr Lowe is PI on “Manuscripts of Ælfric's Catholic Homilies” which is part of the project cluster “Making Medieval English Manuscript: New Knowledge, New Technologies” funded by the Andrew W. Mellon foundation (Scholarly Communication and Information Technology Program), 2011-13.


Supervision

Dr Lowe would be particularly interested in supervising potential research students in topics in Old English, history of literacy, history of English, editing, and medieval manuscript studies.
