Biography

Carole Hough is Professor of Onomastics. Her research interests include English and Scottish personal names and place-names, literary onomastics, onomastic theory, Old English language and literature, semantics and lexicology. Recent books and edited volumes include The Oxford Handbook of Names and Naming (2016), "An Ald Reht": Essays on Anglo-Saxon Law (2014), Beginning Old English (2nd edn 2013, with John Corbett) and New Directions in Colour Studies (2011, with Carole P. Biggam, Christian J. Kay and David S. Simmons).  She also has over 300 other publications, mainly on Old and Middle English, historical and contemporary semantics, Anglo-Saxon law, onomastics and manuscript studies. She edited the journal  Nomina from 1998-2007. She was Principal Investigator for the JISC-funded Scots Words and Place-names project (March-November 2011), in partnership with Scottish Language Dictionaries and the Scottish Place-Name Society. She was also Co-Investigator for the AHRC-funded projects Scottish Toponymy in Transition (2011-2014) and Mapping Metaphor with the Historical Thesaurus (2012-2015). She is currently Principal Investigator for the RSE-funded Cognitive Toponymy project (2014-2016), and the Leverhulme-funded project Recovering the Earliest English Language in Scotland: evidence from place-names (2016-2018).

Supervision

Professor Hough’s areas of postgraduate supervision are Old English, onomastics and semantics. She welcomes applications in these areas. 

Additional information

Professor Hough is a former President of the International Council of Onomastic Sciences and the International Society of Anglo-Saxonists. She is currently Vice-President of the Society for Name Studies in Britain and Ireland, a Council Member of the English Place-Name Society, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
