Theology and Religious Studies funding for postgraduate study

Theology and Religious Studies at Glasgow has a number of bursaries and funds which will offer a full or partial fee waiver to those studying for a research Masters degree or a PhD at the University of Glasgow. The bursaries will only be availablee to those who intend to undertake postgraduate study at the University of the Glasgow.  You can apply for a bursary at the same time that you apply for the degree.

1. Please submit the TRS Application Form 2024-2025 electronically (with a typed signature) together with a cv to:

2. Please also ask one of your academic referees (or your supervisor if you are already a graduate student) to submit a brief reference in support of your application to the same e-mail address.

Theology and Religious Studies - Guidance

Barclay Scholarship

Type of award: Scholarship

Subject area: Theology and Religious Studies

Programme: All postgraduate programmes

About the award: Founded in 1983 in memory of William Barclay, minister and theologian in Glasgow. Offered to a suitably qualified graduate student of Theology, from a university outwith the United Kingdom, who proposes to pursue full-time study or research in the University of Glasgow in a subject falling within Theology and Religious Studies. The scholar will reside in Glasgow and work under the supervision of a member of the academic staff in Theology and Religious Studies.

FUNDING

Number of awards: 1 - 3 per year

Value of award: Varies from year to year, usually £5,000 (to be paid as fee waiver)

Duration of funding: 1 year (with the possibility to renew in subsequent years of study)

Funding available from: 1 September 2021

ELIGIBILITY

Eligibility criteria: These awards are available to students who are graduates of a non-UK university. Priority may be given to students from beyond Europe. Awards are based on academic excellence and merit.

This award is available for applicants holding an offer and currently registered students. To be considered for this award, the University must already have received your application and accepted you - conditionally or unconditionally - by the application deadline.

Priority may be given to applicants whose research project aligns with the subject area's research expertise.

Hooper Holt Scholarship in Church History

Type of award: Scholarship

Subject area: Theology and Religious Studies

Programme: PhD

About the award: This scholarship will pay home fees for a three-year doctorate in any area of Church History for which there is appropriate supervision within the subject area. It will also provide funds of up to £750 to support research trips and conference attendance. Projects relating to the ecclesiastical history of the Reformation and Renaissance and to twentieth century church history will be given preference.

FUNDING

Number of awards: 2

Value of award: Home fees + up to £750 to be paid on production of receipts for research trips or conferences. (These funds can be used to cover any reasonable costs including accommodation and travel, conferences fees, photocopying and other reprographic costs).

Duration of funding: 3 years

Funding available from: October 2021

ELIGIBILITY

Eligibility criteria: Applicants must have been accepted for a PhD programme at the University of Glasgow. The project must lie in an area of church history and the primary supervisor must be a member of the TRS staff. Projects relating to the ecclesiastical history of the Reformation and Renaissance and to twentieth century church history will be given preference.

Priority may be given to applicants whose research project aligns with the subject area's research expertise. 

International students may apply but the scholarship will fund home fees only.

Mosspark Scholarship

Type of award: Scholarship

About the award: Available to students from low income and developing countries to support their study of theology, usually at graduate level. 

FUNDING

Number of awards: 1

Value of award: Generally £1,500

Duration of funding: 1 year (with the possibility of renewing in subsequent years of study)

Funding available from: 1 September 2021

ELIGIBILITY

Elegibility criteria: This scholarship is available to students studying Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Glasgow. Priority may be given to PGR or PGT students (where not already designated), and will only be given to a student from a 'low income and developing country' in the Majority World. Awards are based on academic excellence and merit.

This award is available for applicants holding an offer and currently registered students. To be considered for this award, the University must already have received your application and accepted you - conditionally or unconditionally - by the application deadline.

 Priority may be given to applicants whose research project aligns with the subject area's research expertise.

Mullo Weir Travel Award

Type of award: Award

About the award: To enable students of Theology and Religious Studies whose academic studies are specifically related to the language, history, archaeology, literature or cultures of the Middle East to travel to the Middle East with a view to advancing their studies.

Value of award: Maximum available is £1,250

Duration of funding: Limited to one research trip

Funding available from: 1 September 2021

ELIGIBILITY

Eligibility criteria: This award is limited to postgraduate taught and research students who need to travel to the Middle East for their studies.

Trinity College Research Scholarship

Type of award: Scholarship

Subject area: Theology and Religious Studies

Programme: All postgraduate research programmes

About the award: 

  1. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a postgraduate student studying for a higher degree (one-year Masters by Research, or three-year PhD) at the University of Glasgow
  2. It will be annually renewable in the case of a PhD programme, subject to the standard progress reports, for a maximum period of 3 years
  3. It will be awarded only to appropriately qualified candidates who must have at least one designated degree in theology or divinity in the broad sense at bachelor’s or master’s level (taught or research), or equivalents who meet the general admission criteria of the Faculty of Arts and the Department

Number of awards: Multiple

Value of award: Fee waiver for home/EU fees

Duration of funding: 1 year (with the possibility of renewing in subsequent years of study)

Funding available from: 1 September 2021

ELIGIBILITY

Eligibility criteria: This award will be confined to projects in the areas of religion, Church or theology that have been distinctive or related to Scotland, its peoples and cultures, past or present. 

This award is available for applicants holding an offer and currently registered students. To be considered for this award, the University must already have received your application and accepted you - conditionally or unconditionally - by the application deadline.

Priority may be given to applicants whose research project aligns with the subject area's research expertise.
