Research interests

Biography:

My research interests are in Information Visualisation, and particularly in empirical studies of graph drawing. I am interested in how best to display relational information for user understanding, and in designing effective evaluation methods that can produce results to inform the design of information visualisation systems. I have worked on a wide range of aspects in this area: including sketched graph drawing, biological networks, animated dynamic graphs, visual aesthetics, and Euler diagrams.

I have written a book on Empirical Methods for HCI research, published by CUP in 2012: it’s intended audience is PhD students, or anyone who is starting out in the exciting field of empirical user studies.

My teaching responsibilities have included first year and second year courses in HCI and Information Management, as well as a general first year course for students who do not want to take Computing Science as an Honours option. At the higher levels, I have taught HCI, Artificial Intelligence, Professional Skills, and Research Readings. I am an advocate of student peer-review, and have promoted and supported the use of the Aropa peer-review system (mainly at the universities of Glasgow and Auckland, although it is used at several other universities worldwide). I have Teaching Excellence Awards from both the University of Glasgow and the University of Queensland.

I am coordinator for all Student Mobility programmes within the School of Computing Science, covering international and Erasmus exchanges.  I am an elected member of the Council of Senate and of the Senate Business Committee.  I am elected member of the University's Education Policy & Strategy Committee, a nominated member of the University's Learning and Teaching Committee, and a Senate Assessor for student conduct.  I sit on the Ethics Committee for the College of Science & Engineering.  In 2013-14, I convened a university-wide working group on the process of gathering student feedback through online questionnaires.

Research Interests:

- Visualisation of relational information.  I am interested in the ways in which we can depict node-link graph information effectively, so as to support understanding. This topic covers: dynamic graphs, empirical investigations, sketched graphs, automatic layout algorithms, multivariate visualisation, animation, specialised visualisation techniques (e.g bundles, curves, hierarchies, cascades), and applications (recently, social networks and transport maps)

Staff involved: John Hamer.

External collaborator(s): Daniel Archambault (Swansea); Stephen Kobourov (Arizona); Martin Nollenberg (Karlsruhe); Max Roberts (Essex)

 - Empirical studies in information visualisation.  I am interested in the ways in which we can investigate information visualisations empirically, and collect and analyse data about their effectiveness. I am interesting in defining an experimental process which can be made easy for first-timers – the nature of psychology experiments does not always transfer easily to HCI. My book “Experimental Human Computer Interaction” takes the researcher through the steps necessary for designing and conducting an experiment (including analysis of data).

External collaborator(s): Daniel Archambault (Swansea).

- Aesthetics in interface design.  I am interested in how the visual aesthetic decisions made in the creation of an interface may affect the usability of the interface, with respect to task performance rather than subjective preference: implicitly – can we create visual designs for our interfaces so that they are more effective? I have been looking at both the layout of the interface objects on the screen, as well as the complexity of the images used in the interface. Investigating these ideas requires many carefully controlled empirical studies.

Staff involved: John Hamer; Paul Siebert; David Simmons (Psychology); Martin Lages (Psychology).

- Collaborative learning technologies. I am interested in how we can develop online learning technologies that encourage peer-learning, a model that both allows students to learn from each other, as well as goes part-way to breaking down the ‘teacher-as-expert’ barrier – resulting in a more communal learning environment. Importantly, instructors will not use such technology if it is not easy to use, if it is not easy for students to use, and if there is not sufficient technical and pedagogic support. I am involved in two such systems at the moment: Aropa (peer-review), and SJTWise (ranked choice questions).

Staff involved: John Hamer; Amanda Sykes (Learning & Teaching Centre).
