Glasgow success at SICSA PhD conference

Congratulations to Glasgow's Wing Li whose poster on 'Improving the Performance of non-Java Languages on a JVM' was judged best 3rd year poster at the SICSA PhD conference held at the University of St Andrews on 9 - 10 June 2014.

The Java programming language, combined with the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), is used by billions of computers worldwide. The JVM is host to an increasing number of programming languages, but its optimisations are tuned towards Java program behaviour. Wing's research aim is to improve the performance of non-Java code on the JVM. To do this, he initially profiled Java, Clojure, JRuby, Jython and Scala workloads for their dynamic characteristics. The results showed differences in the bytecode, methods and objects used by each language. He plans to exploit the differences in observed behaviour to tune existing optimisations and introduce novel optimisations to the HotSpot JVM.

Wing says, "This is the second time I have participated in the Poster Session at the SICSA PhD Conference. It is really enjoyable and a great opportunity to speak to other students about your research and receive feedback. I highly recommend participating if you plan to attend next year's conference."
