I have worked at the University of Glasgow since 1st July 1980. Over the decades I have held numerous posts as a research technician, research fellow, lecturer, and professor. My first position was within the Institute of Physiology and following several organisational changes I am now a member of the School of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Health. I completed my MSc and PhD through the Faculty of Medicine and in 2017 was awarded a Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. I have over 150 publications in scientific journals and books stretching back to 1985.
Research interests
Research Theme: Vascular and Comrbidities
I have been studying the cardiovascular system for over 40 years. My particular interest is in the autonomic (nerve-mediated) control of arteries and veins and, in particular, the interactions between the various cells of the vascular wall and the function and distribution of vascular adrenergic receptors.
I have used laser scanning microscopy for over 30 years to examine the structure of the vascular wall and the distribution of GPCRs involved in vascular function. This has often involved the use of fluorescent drugs and 3D image processing. My interest in image processing has been augmented by the development of powerful graphics PCs, High Performance Computers and Virtual Reality headsets and related technologies. I also use high-end animation software and games engines to create interactive content for learning ad teaching.
More recently, I have become interested in machine learning to enhance my 3D image processing work and computer aided methods for studying drug-receptor interactions and molecular dynamics.

Teaching
I was the programme coordinator for the Physiology BSc for 11 years and the course coordinator for Autonomic Nervous System for 13 years. I designed and introduced the UG and PG BioImaging courses and currently act as course coordinator for the UG Level 4 BioImaging course. I also coordinate the PGT course on ‘Assessing Vascular Function’. I deliver a range of L3 teaching sessions to Human Biology, Pharmacology, Neuroscience and Anatomy students. I am also one of the regular pharmacology tutors.
I offer a selection of video tutorials on image analysis (and some science topics) via my YouTube channel which has attracted over 700,000 views and 38,500 hours of watch time (as of March 2024).
