Biography

Paul completed a BSc (Hons) in Immunology as a Glasgow University undergraduate and a PhD investigating the associations of inflammatory biomarkers with CVD under Prof Gordon Lowe at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Working with Prof Naveed Sattar, Paul was awarded a BHF Advanced Training Fellowship in 2010 and a BHF Intermediate Basic Scientist Fellowship in 2013, focusing on natriuretic peptides and other biomarkers of cardiac stress. Paul was awarded a distinction and the 150th Anniversary prize during an MSc in Epidemiology at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 2014.

Research interests

Member:

Paul's research work encompasses a wide range of epidemiological work investigating risk factors for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other related chronic and acute conditions. In particular, Paul's work focuses on circulating biomarkers of disease, and he oversees the running of the metabolic medicine laboratory. Specific biomarkers of interest include cardiac markers such as NT-proBNP and high sensitivity troponin measurements, and in particular their use in cardiovascular risk scores. Paul has also made a strong contribution to the scientific literature on vitamin D.  http://orcid.org/0000-0002-7970-3643
