I completed a BSc (Hons) in Immunology as a Glasgow undergraduate and a PhD on the associations of inflammatory biomarkers with CVD under Prof Gordon Lowe at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. I am also studying for an MSc in Epidemiology at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. My research interests focus on biomarkers and their epidemiological associations with, and clinical use in, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and related chronic conditions. Working with Prof Naveed Sattar, I was awarded a BHF Advanced Training Fellowship in 2010 and a BHF Intermediate Basic Scientist Fellowship in 2013, focussing on natriuretic peptides and other biomarkers of cardiac stress. A key theme of this work is whether routine testing of B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) or NT-proBNP might be a cost-effective addition to existing clinical risk scores in the prediction of CVD. I also have an active research interest in vitamin D and whether measurement of circulating levels in the clinical setting, or vitamin d supplementation, confers benefit in specific diseases.
