Biography

Barbara Nicholl joined General Practice and Primary Care in July 2012 as a Lecturer. Her role here is split between research and coordination of the MSc in Primary Care, on which she also has teaching responsibilities.

Barbara’s particular interests are the management of persistent pain in primary care, the impact persistent pain has on individuals with other long term conditions (multimorbidity and treatment burden), and the relationship between physical and mental health. She supervises a number of PhD students in this field and on primary care research more generally; she also leads our online distance learning MSc in Primary Health Care

Prior to her post here Barbara worked at Keele University on an NIHR funded cluster randomised controlled trial investigating osteoarthritis and comorbid anxiety and depressive symptoms. Barbara completed her PhD, entitled “Investigation of a multifactorial causal model for chronic widespread pain” in 2009 at the University of Manchester, which involved exploring the role of psychosocial, genetic and physical trauma factors in the onset of chronic widespread pain.

Research interests

  • Epidemiology and management of persistent pain, including the relationship with and impact of persistent pain in the presence of additional physical or mental health long-term conditions
  • Primary care based research including observational studies and randomised controlled trials
