About us

‌"Data" is driving the modern world. Our ability to collect information has the potential to transform lives and ameliorate all that we do. The commercial gains found by companies harnessing information from mass behaviour revealed through Internet use has underpinned a growing appreciation of how masses of data can be exploited to learn about individuals and societies. As we have also improved our ability to gather, store, mine and process data from all aspects of life and scientific endeavour (e.g. literature, biomedicine, urban conurbations, the solar system, climate and the world of elemental chemistry) so are we learning how to exploit this data in order to gather insight into the world around us.

‌The University of Glasgow has a multitude of investigators, from across all of its Colleges, involved in the acquisition, archiving, analysis and exploitation of large datasets pertaining to their own areas of research.

‌The Big Data Network exists to help bring data scientists together from disparate areas within the University of Glasgow; to share ideas in archiving, mining and probing data. The Network provides a space where individuals can discuss their research, share ideas and contemplate solutions to cross-disciplinary problems.  We aim to facilitate research across the board and exploit the diversity and expertise present within the University, and exploit the opportunities which exist to  find novel funding streams for research in the University by optimising contributions of data scientists.
