Lord Kelvin / Adam Smith (LKAS) Readerships (Associate Professors)

The University’s LKAS Readership scheme was established in 2018 to attract outstanding researchers who are coming to the end of prestigious, external early-career fellowships. The scheme offers researchers a continuing academic (Research & Teaching) position and a start-up package.

The LKAS Readers scheme is currently closed to applications.

What we are offering

  • A start-up package of up to £200k will be offered to external candidates only to be spent over the first three years of the appointment. Internal candidates will not be eligible for the start-up package.
  • The scheme offers researchers a continuing academic (Research & Teaching) position. Successful applicants will be appointed at Grade 9 (Reader / Associate Professor).
  • Once Readers are in post, they will be line-managed by staff in the relevant College.

Who we are looking for

  • In order to be eligible for the scheme, candidates must have completed, or be near to completion of, a competitively won external fellowship. A list of qualifying fellowships is available.
  • In addition to having won a qualifying fellowship, candidates must also fulfil all of the following externally-judged research criteria:
    • Have held a prestigious externally-funded fellowship(s), preferably for at least five years. Qualifying fellowships include either a 5-year fellowship, or a combination of fellowships, with at least one of them being of 3 years duration or more and none shorter than 2 years. Fellowship funding must have been secured competitively from a source external to the employing institution.
    • Have won research grants as Principal Investigator within the period of the fellowship(s), with each award being the size of the Russell Group median income for the HESA cost centre. These grants could be funded by UKRI or from equivalent other competitive sources, including from industry or charity, but excludes any funding granted by the employing institution.
    • Have published at least 2 outputs (as corresponding author), within the fellowship(s) period, likely to be assessed at world-leading quality (e.g. in the world’s 1% most highly-cited for the subject, meeting the highest standards of originality, significance and rigour). This outputs criterion could be met by demonstrating research impact of equivalent quality.
    • Have supervised to completion at least 1 post-graduate research student.
  • Candidates should not already be in a continuing position at the point of application. They may, however, start their position at the University of Glasgow as they approach the end of their qualifying fellowship period.
  • We welcome enquiries from candidates from non-conventional but equivalent career backgrounds.
