Usman Hameed, PhD (2014)

On completion of my PhD, the University of Sargodha, Pakistan (my employer) elevated me to the rank of Director of Academics. This success would not have been possible without the relentless support of the School of Law.  I am proud of having studied at the University of Glasgow and not a day passes, when I do not think about Glasgow and its beautiful people. I now have a valuable degree, expanded my vision and Glasgow has given me the gift of critical thinking.

I always recommend Pakistani students heading to UK to make Glasgow their first choice since they are unlikely to get as much support in any other institution as is being offered by the University of Glasgow.

Auke Willems, LLM by Research (2013)

The LLM by Research is a great programme for anyone not quite ready for a PhD, but  looking to do independent research in a particular field of law. For me, the LLM was the ideal link between my taught LLM and a PhD.

As an independent programme, the LLM by Research encouraged me to deepen/strengthen my knowledge of law and at the same time develop the research and writing skills that are now a great asset for any future legal career.

Mari Takeuchi, PhD (2014)

Undertaking a PhD while working is not the easiest task. However, it is well worth the effort if you are a student of the School of Law at the University of Glasgow.  I was able to complete my PhD on account of the generous counsel and invaluable encouragement I received from my supervisors, and the continued help and support I received from the faculty’s administrative staff. My warm memories of Glasgow (including the damp air) coupled with the lively research atmosphere of the school, which I could sense through its website, also helped to keep me motivated to continue my affiliation with the University.

I am currently working as a lecturer at Okayama University (Japan). As an academic, the experience of completing a PhD thesis has broadened my horizons and increased my confidence. Moreover, thanks to the excellent reputation of the School of Law’s teaching staff, a PhD from the University of Glasgow is well regarded and I have no doubt this will help to increase my professional opportunities in the field of international law.

Louis Capaldi, LLM by Research (2014)

I undertook my LLM by Research at the University of Glasgow part-time, in order that I could continue to work full-time as a solicitor. My experience from start to finish with the School of Law was an entirely positive one. The highly professional academic staff, resources and support given were all outstanding. It was intellectually stimulating and provided me with not only a greater depth of knowledge in the area of law I was researching, but also equipped me with valuable research skills. This gives me added confidence and independence knowing that I can rely on my own resources in legal problem solving.

Already my LL.M by Research degree has opened career doors that otherwise would not have been possible before. It has without doubt, furthered my chosen career in practicing law in Scotland.

Imtiaz Ahmed Khan, PhD (2014)

Following my PhD degree , I joined the Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan-Pakistan as Assistant Professor of Law.

Studying at the University of Glasgow was a wonderful experience of my life. It brought me several key elements and skills that I can now use in my academic career. The research, postgraduate supervision, experience and professionalism of the academic staff have been impressive. Moreover, the administrative staff are professionally qualified, supportive, and cooperative. I have very good memories of my years at the University of Glasgow with its privileged setting, friendly atmosphere and cultural diversity. The University is very unique in terms of the social and academic environment. I feel that I have received full value-added learning from the School of Law. In addition, the support to international students in immigration, career development and employability by the University has been excellent.

Moreover, Glasgow is a wonderful city – it is beautiful, culturally rich and socially stimulating, and importantly, extremely manageable and cost effective. I couldn't dream of a better place to study and live. I enjoyed the best days of my life at Glasgow. Indeed, Glasgow is second home to me.

Therefore, I would strongly recommend to international students, especially Pakistani students , to join the University of Glasgow for quality education and research.

Lesley Johnston, LLM by Research (2014)

“I chose the LLM by Research at the University of Glasgow so that I could study part-time and continue to work full-time as a solicitor.   The structure of the course was ideal for me, as I had little time to attend the classes that would be required in a taught programme.  My supervisor of studies and the course administrative staff were extremely helpful and very considerate of the fact that my work patterns and commitments were unpredictable.  The process of studying part-time was challenging but made completing my thesis all the more rewarding.   Overall, the course has greatly improved my research and writing skills and has proved to be an invaluable feature on my CV.  It has opened up job opportunities that might otherwise have been beyond my reach.  I am very grateful to the University of Glasgow for making the LLM by Research such a positive experience.”

Rose Ann O’Shea, PhD (2013)

Being successful in achieving my PhD was one of the proudest moments of my life, and my greatest achievement. When I first embarked on my PhD, I had a vision of what this would involve and how long it would it take. However, a change in employment, coupled with various life events, resulted in my plan needing to be revisited and my PhD taking considerably longer than originally envisaged.  During this time, the support that I received from my supervisor was second to none, and the guidance and supervision that I received could not be surpassed. Indeed, had I embarked on my PhD in another institution, it is likely that I would not have been allowed to continue and I am not sure that it would have ever been completed.

I would strongly encourage anyone that is considering embarking on a research degree to visit the wonderful setting of the School of Law at  and to speak to the school team. I cannot praise them highly enough.
