Student Conduct

The University fosters a diverse and inclusive community with values of honesty, integrity and fairness. Students are expected to model good behaviour, upholding academic integrity and treating others with care, respect and dignity.

The University expects good conduct from students, which includes:

  • Being honest and acting with integrity;
  • Being considerate and respectful of others;
  • Taking responsibility for own actions and being mindful of community responsibility;
  • Abiding by the law.

The University needs to ensure that students behave appropriately, adhere to regulations, and do not behave in ways that adversely affect the safety, interests or reputation of the University, its staff or students.

Where students are alleged to have engaged in behaviour which falls short of expectations, the University may take action under the Code of Student Conduct.  Action can also be taken against former students, if the alleged offence took place while they were registered at the University.

Code of Student Conduct

The Code of Student Conduct is the main procedure for registered students and former students who were registered at the time of an alleged breach. The Code lists a series of defined breaches of conduct (which is not exhaustive), and there are separate procedures relating to academic and non-academic misconduct.

A conduct issue may also be considered under the Expected Behaviour Policy, or referred on to Fitness to Study, or Fitness to Practise.

Examples of use:

  • academic misconduct such as plagiarism, contract cheating (e.g. purchasing essays) or examination misconduct;
  • non-academic misconduct such as violent or sexual behaviour; disruptive, harassing or threatening behaviour.

Expected Behaviour Policy

The Expected Behaviour Policy may be applied to any member of the University community including its students, or anyone communicating with the University. The aim of the procedure is to ensure that any unacceptable behaviour is ended. The Policy defines unacceptable behaviour and if there are concerns about a pattern of behaviour which is aggressive, unreasonable, or disruptive, the individual will be asked to modify their behaviour.

Examples of use:

  • students who make unreasonable demands or display harassing or abusive behaviour whilst engaged in another of the University Codes e.g. an academic appeal or formal complaint
  • parents of students who communicate with the University in an unreasonable, abusive or demanding way.

Supporting students

We are committed to supporting students who experience any kind of inappropriate behaviour or challenging times at University.

The Student Conduct team works closely with the University’s Safeguarding, Security and Student Learning Development teams and there is a range of services available to support students.

For any student engaging with Student Conduct processes we encourage contact with the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) Advice Centre. SRC Advisors can support students with guidance on processes, representation at conduct interviews, and referral to other avenues of support.
