Staff surveys - purpose and timing
- University colleagues have the opportunity to contribute to a number of regular surveys. Details can be found on each of the information boxes shown here.
- Please see the University's Staff Privacy Notice which tells you how any personal data which staff submit will be utilised and protected, and the rights they have in relation to it.
- Please note that the Research Culture and Uniforum surveys are no longer running.

Colleague engagement survey
Purpose: The Colleague engagement survey is coordinated by People and Organisational Development and run by People Insight, an external partner. It covers topics related to engagement, including colleagues’ feelings about working here; their role, line management and leadership; and experiences of wellbeing and inclusion. It includes the questions that inform the Strategy KPI for engagement.
Population: All staff who work more than one day / 7 hours a week.
Timing: Annually, typically in the Autumn
Staff travel survey
Purpose: The travel survey asks staff and students about their modes of travelling to the University, their travel patterns and behaviours. The survey results are used to calculate an estimate of carbon emission relating to staff and students commuting and local business travel, identify ways to support more sustainable travel choices and to improve access to the University for staff, students and visitors. The survey results also influence the planning for campus development and facilities.
Population: All staff and students
Timing: Every two years, upcoming survey November 2024. Last survey ran March 2022.

JISC Digital experience insights
Purpose: A national survey administrated by Jisc about HE and FE staff and students’ digital experiences. This survey covers how you are using technology available, what’s helping your work and where improvements can be made.
Population: Open to all, with specific surveys for Professional Services, Teaching and Research staff and Students
Timing: Annual
