Library refurbishment complete

The University Library opened its main doors again yesterday after a major rebuild and refurbishment involving the entrance lobby and Levels 1 and 2.

The University Library opened its main doors again yesterday after a major rebuild and refurbishment involving the entrance lobby and Levels 1 and 2.

The Library’s main, lower floors have been redesigned to create a welcoming atrium, flexible study spaces, a public exhibition space, and new offices for Library Services.

Part of the newly refurbished Level 2 of the University LibraryEntering on Level 2, you’ll find new group study pods and booths, express workstations, and presentation spaces with leather seating, all with plenty of power and data sockets. Wi-Fi has been improved throughout the building too.

Down the new staircase on Level 1, where there used to be only store-rooms, you’ll now find a 150-seat quiet study area and redesigned archive spaces.

University Librarian, Susan Ashworth said: “This refurbishment work marks an exciting new chapter for the University Library and reflects the University’s vision of a world-class, world changing university. I would like to thank staff and students for their patience during these works. We are also grateful to the Friends of Glasgow University Library, for supporting the purchase of new equipment in the Conservation Studio and digital signage in the exhibition space.” 

Accessibility & sustainability

The main entrance is fully accessible to library users with disabilities, and there’s a new accessible reception desk.

New male, female, accessible and gender neutral toilets have been installed.

Efficient LED lighting in the new areas was designed with the University’s carbon and energy management agenda in mind.

Completion of project

Private study pods on Level 1This was the final stage of work on the building, which also included:

  • the new façade in 2013
  • faster lifts in 2015
  • a new ventilation system to improve library users’ comfort

The redevelopment was designed by Glasgow architects Nimmo and Partners LLP and undertaken by the contractor Taylor and Fraser.
