John Durkan Centenary Lecture - 27 October

We are delighted to announce that on 27 October 2014 Professor Sir Tom Devine (University of Edinburgh) will give a public lecture entitled The Durkan Achievement.Durkan

Glasgow-Nankai Lecture

We are delighted to announce the latest in the Glasgow-Nankai Lecture series: Professor Zhu Guanglei, Vice President of Nankai University in Tianjin, China will give a lecture on the change and developing trend on stratification in China.

  • Date: Wednesday 1st October, 6pm
  • Location: Room 201, John McIntyre Building.
  • Abstract: This lecture will give historical background to stratification in China, what it means, how it affects and is related to the poverty gap, social progress and political development, and what this means going forward.

Rome book launch

On Friday September 19, Professor Bob Davis, Dr. Raymond McCluskey, Dr. Leonardo Franchi (all from the St. Andrew’s Foundation, University of Glasgow) and Cav. Ronnie Convery (Director of Communications, Archdiocese of Glasgow) were in Rome to launch a new book Reclaiming the Piazza: Catholic Education as a Cultural Project (Gracewing).  

The launch took place in the Pope Paul VI Auditorium in Vatican City as part of a three-day conference on questions arising on evangelisation and faith in the modern world. Archbishop Rino Fisichella, President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting New Evangelisation, is pictured with the authors as he received his own copy of the book.

Archbishop Fisichella will be a guest of the University of Glasgow in February 2015 when he will give the annual Cardinal Winning Lecture.   Dr. Leonardo Franchi, Head of the St. Andrew’s Foundation commented, ‘It was a privilege to present at this international conference and we were delighted to make fruitful contact with people from many countries: the book will now be travelling to Ireland, Canada, Nigeria, Qatar, Singapore and USA! We hope that it will have a positive impact on a whole range of educators and look forward to developing these links in the future.

Open Access

University of Glasgow authors must email research-openaccess@glasgow.ac.uk  stating publication name, article title, funder, and award numbers as soon as they are notified of acceptance of a paper. All funders and their award numbers should be acknowledged in papers.  This includes relevant past and present awards and studentships. 

Arthritis Research UK, Breast Cancer Campaign, the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK, Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research and the Wellcome Trust are launching a new joint fund for open access from 1st October 2014. The route to accessing this fund is via email to research-openaccess@glasgow.ac.uk as per 1 above.

The University has open access budgets for the funders named in 2 above and for RCUK.  You must email research-openaccess@glasgow.ac.uk at point of acceptance to apply for these funds.  The library administers the funds meaning that significant discounts can be obtained in some cases and there is usually no need for research groups to raise purchase orders.

Excellent public engagement opportunity: Poster competition now open

On November 8th 2014 theGIST will be hosting a conference entitled ‘Science for Society’, themed “Science in Policy-Making: The Role of Evidence-Based Policy in a Modern World”, at the University of Glasgow. The conference will feature a poster competition for early career researchers and research students.

The top 10 posters will be presented at the conference where a winner will be found. The posters will then tour the city, visiting the University of Strathclyde, the Glasgow Science Centre, the Glasgow Skeptics and various local libraries. It will be an excellent public engagement and outreach opportunity, and your research will receive lots of public exposure. A wide variety of research can be useful for evidence-based policy and so we welcome contributions from all areas of science.
