Confucius Day celebration

The University has been celebrating Confucius Day - the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Confucius Institutes.

Confucius Institutes all around the world have been celebrating Confucius Day - the 10th anniversary of the Confucius Institutes. The University of Glasgow Confucius Institute began its celebrations on Thursday 25th September with a marquee in the West Quadrangle where students and staff could come and try their hand at Chinese knot making, calligraphy, paper cutting as well as experiencing a 'taster' language class. This was well received by staff and students alike.

In the evening we celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival, where the highlights were a traditional Chinese flute performance and the traditional food of the festival - Moon Cakes.

A planned event using a marquee hosting the same activities on Argyle Street in the city centre on Friday 26th had to be cancelled because of high winds on the day.

To round off our celebrations, we were honoured on Wednesday 1st October to host a sell-out lecture (over 250 attendees) on ‘Social Stratification in China’ from Professor Zhu Guanglei, Vice President of our partner, Nankai University in Tianjin, China. In the latest of the Nankai – Glasgow Lecture series, Professor Zhu discussed China’s changing social structure and its drivers. His fascinating presentation (translated by Glasgow Politics student Hua Wang) stimulated a long and very lively Q&A session.
