The University of Glasgow Singapore held its second graduation ceremony on 10 October 2014.

The University of Glasgow Singapore held its second graduation ceremony on 10 October 2014 at the Star Performing Arts Centre, writes Natasha Quinn.

A total of 209 students from all five University of Glasgow programmes, delivered in partnership with Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), received awards in a range of engineering subjects. The graduation ceremony followed the traditions of the Glasgow campus even including a piper (from Singapore!) who led the procession out following the ceremony. More than 700 guests, consisting of parents, relatives, academic and industrial partners and alumni, attended the event.

This year the graduates and guests were entertained at the start of the ceremony by a video which had been recorded specially for the graduation. It provided a background to the university, its traditions and distinguished alumni.  It also included present day achievements and shots of the Singapore students during their summer visit to Glasgow for the Overseas Immersion Programme.

Professor Anton Muscatelli, Principal and Vice-Chancellor; Professor John Chapman, Vice-Principal  Emeritus;  Professor John Marsh, Head of School of Engineering and Mr David Bennion, Head of Registry were the presiding officers of the graduation.

The prize-winner of the Professor Wu Dao Quan Outstanding Engineering Student Award for academic year 2013-14 was Mr Zhang Pin Lee from Mechanical Design Engineering.

The University of Glasgow has been offering programmes in Singapore in partnership with SIT since 2011. Our presence in Singapore began initially with two engineering programmes and has since grown to five programmes. These programmes give polytechnic graduates in Singapore the opportunity to upgrade their qualifications to a BEng (Honours) or BSc (Honours) awarded by the University of Glasgow.   Student numbers have been increasing each year and there are currently over 600 students enrolled on these programmes.

Competition success for Singapore students

A team of six students from the University of Glasgow Singapore have reached the final stage of a competition to design a solution to a safety or security challenge faced in Singapore. The students designed and built a remote controlled tricopter with a camera attachment. The purpose of their design was to help the Singapore Police during operations. Having reached the final three in the competition the team can only wait to find out if they have won the top prize. The results will be announced on 8 January 2015. There are cash prizes on offer for the winning team and there is the possibility that their prototype could be further developed and implemented. The Competition is run by the Ministry of Home Affairs – Security Awareness For Everyone (SAFE) programme.  The Aeronautical Engineering students who comprise the team are: Elijah Lin Enya, Benjamin Tan, Jeremy Goh, Nicholas Mok, Lakshman s/o Vangadashalapathy and Yoong Tyrus. Dr “Spot” Srigrarom, Associate Professor, Aerospace Systems, was the supervising professor for the project.
