Principal in China

The University’s Principal, Professor Anton Muscatelli, has returned from a fruitful visit to China and Singapore. The main purpose of his trip to China was to develop the University of Glasgow’s Joint Educational Partnership with Nankai University in Tianjin.

‌The main purpose of his trip to China was to develop the University of Glasgow’s Joint Educational Partnership with Nankai University in Tianjin. Accompanied by Professor Anne Anderson, Vice Principal and head of the Social Sciences College, and President Gong Ke from Nankai University, the Principal attended a meeting at the Chinese Ministry of Education on Thursday, March 20.

Nankai March 14 The following day, he delivered the second in the University of Glasgow Nankai Lecture Series – on the subject of “After the financial crisis: the need for co-operation in the world economy”. The Principal was also conferred with a guest professorship by Nankai University, which is the alma mater of the former Chinese premier Zhou Enlai and regarded as one of the country’s leading public universities.

Other highlights included a visit to Hanban –  the headquarters for Confucius Institutes around the world – in Beijing; an interview by Bruce Connolly (an alumnus of the University) on Radio Beijing; and the launch of a new series of events – The Adam Smith Business School careers seminars – which was attended by more than 80 alumni at the Beijing Hilton hotel. The inaugural event, which was aimed at providing careers support to recent Chinese graduates through panel sessions with key Chinese recruitment and industry figures, University careers staff, and older, successful alumni, was hosted by the Principal who was accompanied by Professor Anderson and Professor Jim Love, head of the Adam Smith Business School.

The final leg of the Principal’s journey involved a visit to the University of Glasgow Singapore – where the University of Glasgow is in partnership with the Singapore Institute of Technology – to hold meetings with senior staff and the President of SIT as well as University of Glasgow staff based there.
