One of the stars of the 2006 Edinburgh Cow Parade has returned home to the School of Chemistry, writes Dr. Rudi Marquez.

The Chem-moo-stry cow is returning to the School of Chemistry after a long stay at the Glasgow Science Centre, writes Dr. Rudi Marquez, School of Chemistry.

The Chem-moo-stry cow was originally conceived by our colleagues Dr. Gordon Barr and the late Dr. Andy Parkin for the Edinburgh Cow Parade in 2006.  Covered in striking designs showcasing the research taking place across Scotland, Cow No. 64 - Chem-moo-stry, was released onto the world’s largest public art event. The Chem-moo-stry cow was extremely successful at capturing the public’s imagination and promoting science to the general public.

Chemistry Cow 300 imageAfter a successful spell roaming the streets of Edinburgh, the Chem-moo-stry cow was relocated to the Glasgow Science Centre where it spent a few years amazing and bringing a smile to countless school children. Unfortunately, the wear and tear on the Chem-moo-stry cow after a few years took its toll, and it had to be retired from exhibition.

We are very pleased to be able to announce that after being lovingly restored by colleagues from the School of Chemistry, the Chem-moo-stry cow is back in display at the Joseph Black Building.  The Chem-moo-stry cow will be part of a display celebrating the life and contributions of our late colleague Dr. Andy Parkin.

Dr. Andy Parkin (1975-2008) was a very popular, enthusiastic and energetic scientist, with a zest for the science and the outdoors. Tragically, after a short illness, on the 28th of August 2008 Andy passed away. Andy leaves behind a legacy of innovative research in the science and art of crystallography.

Cow Parade, the fabulous collection of life-size fibreglass cows strikingly decorated and painted by local artists, is now the world’s largest public art event. From Chicago in 1999 and New York in 2000, via London, Kansas City, Cape Town, Warsaw, Bucharest, Houston, Barcelona, Tokyo, Moscow, Atlanta, Monte Carlo, Sao Paulo, Las Vegas, Prague and Sidney, CowParade had grown in stature to become a major force in world art.
