Ross and Helen stayed at their location and kept track of the intruder.

When police arrived the two University staffers assisted and eventually, after a chase, the suspect was tackled and arrested.  Gordon Mackenzie, Head of Security and Central Services, said: "It was a resourceful and brave piece of work which - if they had not responded - could have had very serious consequences."

Ross, who has worked for the University for more than six years, said: "It did involved a bit of a chase, once the police arrived on the scene.  I suppose it was just the heat of the moment!"

Helen told the eNews: "You really don't think about it...you just jump in and act. It's the adrenaline. I really enjoy the job and that was very exciting."

The latest police figures for the last six months show reductions in crime in the West End. They indicate a 22% reduction in crimes in which students are the victims. Housebreaking, theft and assault cases were all down.  There is still cause for concern about the level of bike thefts in the area.
