‌The Eco-Hub at Queen Margaret Union is the first office on campus to be entirely furnished from recycled furniture sourced from WARPit.

By using the WARPit system, the Eco Hub was decorated with a range of furniture for free, including easy chairs, felt notice boards and filling cabinets.

The Eco-Hub is a new initiative born out of the partnership between GUEST (Glasgow University Environmental Sustainability Team), Queen Margaret Union and Estates and Buildings management.

The small office space on level 1 of the QMU, which used to be home to a computer repair shop, has now been re-allocated to the Environmental Sustainability Team to be used as their office and central location.

As one of the main aims of the Eco-Hub is to become the epicentre of sustainable practice on campus, it was only natural to furnish it with second-hand goods.

WARPit

WARPit is a system designed to facilitate the reuse of surplus work items, furniture and equipment within the University community.

By logging in to the portal, registered users can view listings of items that are no longer needed and that can then be claimed for free.

There is a wide range of items available and possibly one of the most unusual ones is a hospital bed that is up for grabs at the very moment.

Since WARPit launched to all University staff in September, the scheme has helped the University save nearly £60,000. It has avoided over 10tons of waste and 30tons of carbon dioxide emissions in total.

For more unusual or highly valuable items, follow the WARPit Facebook page
