A leading University of Glasgow academic has been appointed as a visiting professor at Sun Yat-sen University in China.

Professor Anna Dominiczak, the University’s Regius Professor of Medicine, Vice Principal and Head of the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, will hold the post until October 2016. Her work will focus on new approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension.

The appointment is the latest development in an ongoing partnership between the University and Sun Yat-sen University, located in the Guangzhou province. In May, UK Business Secretary Vince Cable MP announced a Memorandum of Understanding between the Universities of Glasgow, Warwick and Sun Yat-sen which will lead to an exchange of medical students between Scotland and China.

Professor Dominiczak said: “I’m pleased and proud to accept the position of Adjunctive Professor in Sun Yat-sen University’s First Affiliated Hospital.

“It’s a tremendous honour and I’m glad to be playing a key role in extending the University of Glasgow’s partnership with this leading Chinese research and teaching university.”

Professor Dominiczak officially accepted the position from Professor Jun Tao, Director of Hypertension and Cardiology at Sun Yat-sen University, during a visit to China earlier this month.

Sun Yat-sen University, founded in 1924 by the first president of the Republic of China, is ranked among the top 10 public universities in China. Sun Yat-sen College of Medical Sciences is renowned for its scientific research in a number of areas, including medical genetics, ophthalmology, tumours, parasites, organ transplant, infectious liver disease and molecular medical science and is part of the largest affiliated hospital system in China.
