Professor Alan McGregor, Director of the Training and Employment Research Unit (TERU), which is located in the Adam Smith Business School, has been appointed to the Big Lottery Scotland Committee.

Big Lottery Scotland is currently responsible for managing a portfolio of grants totalling around £500 million and in any one year provides new grants of around £70 million. Grants are awarded to principally third sector organisations – but also local authorities - to help improve the prospects of Scotland’s most disadvantaged people with a strong emphasis on building on community assets, supporting innovation, investing in prevention and providing grants where appropriate of sufficient scale and longevity to make a significant difference.

Most of the funding is focussed on Investing in Communities through:

  • Supporting 21st Century Life - focussing on families most in need to prevent poverty and disadvantage and help children secure better life chances.
  • Life Transitions - aimed at helping more disadvantaged people make positive transitions, for example, when leaving care in the case of young people.
  • Growing Community Assets - to pass to communities through asset ownership greater control and influence over their futures.

Being a Big Lottery Scotland Committee member involves working to ensure that the grants awarded are the ones which will impact most on Scotland’s most disadvantaged communities and groups of the population. Additionally, committee members are required to contribute to the development of Big Lottery Scotland’s strategic framework and to build effective relationships with key stakeholders.
