Provenance: John Ferguson (1837-1916), Professor of Chemistry, University of Glasgow:  source unknown;  pencil acquisition note on front pastedown “John Ferguson Glasgow July 10, 1883” together with his brief bibliographical notes on front free endpaper and his note on rear pastedown on the proverb “Mendaces Cretenses”.

Binding: 18th-century, terracotta paste-paper boards;  rear endpapers have watermark of fleur-de-lis within a circle, below which are the initials G B T;  sprinkled red-edged leaves.   Size:  224 x 165 mm.
Leaf size: 219 x 160 mm.
Annotations: Frequent marginal notes in a humanist hand in Latin, occasionally in Greek;  occasional "nota" marks;  Proverbs numbered "1-306";  numerous annotations in Latin in a humanist hand on verso of final blank leaf including proverbs and quotations (e.g. from Antonius Urceus Codrus), together with a brief annotation in Italian;  number "39" in pencil on front pastedown.
