William Hunter (1718-1783), physician and anatomist:  according to Pietro Molini’s bill to Hunter (University of Glasgow Library, Hunter Papers, H214), he purchased a copy of the Sermones de sanctis for Hunter at the Brancas de Lauraguais sale (lot 69) for 36 livres 19 sous;  however, lot 69 in Guillaume de Bure, Catalogue d’une collection de livres choisis, provenans du cabinet de M*** (Paris:  1770) is an edition described as “sine loco et anno” and bound in “M.R.” (i.e. red goatskin) - both descriptions being at odds with the present (and only) copy of this work in the Hunterian Library, which has a calf binding and in addition a spine label clearly identifying the edition as “1473”.

Binding: France, 18th-century brown calf;  covers decorated with a triple gold-fillet border, a small gold fleuron at each corner;  gold-tooled spine;  marbled endpapers;  gilt-edged leaves;  green silk bookmark.   Size:  292 x 214 mm.
Leaf size: 283 x 202 mm.
Annotations: Occasional early marginal annotations, corrections, nota marks and manicules.
Decoration: Initials supplied throughout in red (some with marginal flourishes) or in red and reserved white;  capital strokes and paragraph marks in red throughout.
Imperfections: Wanting 48/1 and the blank leaf 48/8 (ff. 463 and 470).
