Binding: France, 18th-century red goatskin;  covers decorated with a triple gold-fillet border, a small gold star at each corner;  gold-tooled spine;  marbled endpapers;  gilt-edged leaves;  turquoise silk bookmark.   Size:  288 x 211 mm.

Annotations: Copious interlinear annotations in an early hand in quire 1;  extensive marginal and interlinear annotations (all heavily washed out) in the text of Persius (quires 10 and 11);  author’s name on recto of first blank leaf 1/1;  very occasional evidence of early signatures.
Decoration: On 1/2r a historiated seven-line initial ‘S’ (the opening initial of book I of Juvenal) is supplied in gold, blue, green, crimson and white, depicting the miracle of S. Nicholas and the resurrection of the three boys;  the opening initials of books II-V are supplied in gold on a square ground of blue and crimson embellished with tracery;  the opening four-line initial ‘N’ of the text of Persius is supplied in gold;  other initials supplied in red or blue;  paragraph marks supplied in alternate blue and red;  the capital letter of the first word of each line of text is washed in yellow;  running book numbers in blue and red in the Juvenal;  text of Juvenal enclosed within triple red-ink rules (except for the final three pages).
