Provenance: Sir William Stirling Maxwell (1818-1878), 9th baronet, art historian and collector:  engraved armorial bookplate printed in red on front pastedown with name “William Stirling Maxwell” and three mottoes “Gang forward”, “Poco a poco” and ”I am ready”;  his engraved booklabel “Emblems Keir” printed in red on rear pastedown;  monogram of Sir William Stirling Maxwell added in blind to centre of front cover and a different version added to rear cover;  Stirling Maxwell’s shelfmark “23F” in pencil on rear pastedown;  two other Stirling Maxwell shelfmarks in pencil on verso of front free endpaper “K.3” and “50.3” (the latter lightly deleted).
Sir John Stirling Maxwell (1866-1956), 10th baronet, Sir William’s son:  bequeathed a portion of the Stirling Maxwell library to University of Glasgow Library in 1956 (received in 1958).

Binding: 18th/19th-century blind-tooled calf;  covers decorated with a double fillet and a decorative roll to form a mitred panel design;  blind monogram stamps added to both covers at a later date (see Provenance);  rebacked, with a gilt spine title;  sprinkled red-edged leaves;  rear free endpaper has a Pro Patria watermark.   Size: 193 x 153 mm.

Decoration: Many woodcuts partially hand-coloured in dull red, some enclosed within a compass-drawn brown ink circle.
