John Mitford (1781-1859), of Benhall, Saxmundham, Suffolk, and of Oriel College, Oxford:  inscriptions on front free endpaper “Mitford 1808” and “Mitford sale 1859 K/b/”;  lot 904 “Horatii Opera omnia, cum Porphyrionis Commento et cum Acronis divertissimi Commentatoris Expositione (cura R. Regii) MS. notes in a co[n]temporary handwriting, the Harleian copy in old russia. s.l. & a. Venetiis, 1491 [sic]” in Catalogue of the ... collection of Greek and Latin classics ... forming the first portion of the library of ... John Mitford (London: Leigh, Sotheby and John Wilkinson, 1859);  sold for £1.5.0 according to the annotated British Library copy of the sale catalogue - shelfmark S.C.S. 475.
Edward Knight (fl. 1857-1874), bookseller, Islington, London:  sold book to William Euing.
William Euing (1788-1874), insurance broker, Glasgow:  purchased from Knight 30 Jan. 1863 for £1.16.0 according to Euing’s pencil acquisition note with price “30 1 63 Knt. 36/-” together with his acquisition number “No 1418” and superseded inventory number "88" on front pastedown;  source confirmed in Euing’s acquisitions inventory (University of Glasgow Library MS Euing 49).

Binding: England, 18th-century diced russia, bound for Lord Harley by Jane Steel.  Both covers decorated with a double gold-fillet border and a centre panel formed by a blind floral and fleur-de-lys roll (Nixon, ‘Harleian bindings’, pl. 10, Steel roll 1) with floral ornaments in blind at the outer corners;  edges decorated in gold with Steel roll 2;  gold-tooled spine, compartments decorated with acorn and other ornaments to form a lozenge shape;  sprinkled red-edged leaves.   Size: 307 x 214 mm.
Leaf size: 297 x 203 mm.
Annotations: Frequent marginal and interlinear annotations in a 16th-century hand in Latin (occasionally in Greek) in quire a (beginning of Carmina) and in quires k-o (Sermones), less frequent elsewhere in the book;  occasional nota marks and manicules;  frequent underlining in red ink, less often in brown ink;  note on rear flyleaf “post expositione Mediolani imp[re]ssa p[er] Antoniū Zarotū ... M.cccc.Lxxxv. Impe[n]sis Augustin[i] Mariae Conagi”.
Decoration: Five-line initial “M” on A2r supplied in blue with reserved white and set on a square ground of red pen-work decoration;  other initials supplied throughout in alternate red and blue;  capital strokes supplied in red throughout;  paragraph marks supplied in red or blue throughout.
Imperfections: None.
