Provenance: Unidentified owner:  on 1/2r is an unidentified coat of arms mainly painted in now oxidized silver: a chevron between three castles double-towered, with foliage in red and oxidized silver extending from both sides of the shield;  at the top of the shield is the figure of a long-haired, bearded man whose fore-fingers are placed at the corners of his open mouth, and who is dressed in a garment painted in now oxidized silver, pulled in at the waist and with loose half-length sleeves, which reveal a red tunic buttoned at the wrists.

Thomas Osborne (d. 1767), bookseller:  purchased all the Harleian printed books;  top corner of first front flyleaf cut off - as in many other Harleian volumes - probably by Osborne to remove his earlier price (cf. J.B. Oldham, Shrewsbury School bindings, p.114);  revised price in pencil “4v- 15.15.0” adjacent to excision;  no. 3149 (which includes three other 15th-century editions of Bartolus de Saxoferrato) in Osborne’s Catalogus bibliothecae Harleianae, vol. 3 (London: 1744);  the three accompanying editions of Bartolus de Saxoferrato, uniformly bound in 18th-century diced russia, are also in the Hunterian Library (see shelfmarks Bv.1.2 (B18), Bv.1.3 (B19), Bv.1.4 (B20)).

Binding: England, 18th-century gold-tooled diced russia, bound for Lord Harley by Christopher Chapman.   On both covers double fillets form a frame, within which is a border made up of three separate tools including Nixon, ‘Harleian bindings’, pl. 15, Chapman no. 11.   The head and foot of the spine are decorated with Nixon, ‘Harleian bindings’, pl. 14, Chapman roll 2, and the spine compartments are decorated with several individual tools, one of which is a slightly larger version of Nixon, ‘Harleian bindings’, pl. 15, Chapman no. 17.   The edges are decorated with Chapman roll 2, and the turn-ins are undecorated;  marbled endpapers.   Size:  443 x 295 mm.
Leaf size: 429 x 280 mm. 
Annotations: Frequent marginal annotations and running headings in a 16th-century hand, and foliated in the same hand “p[rimum] foliu[m]” to “CC48” from 1/2 to 26/9 (the same hand supplied the marginalia,  running headings and foliation in Bv.1.2 (B18) and Bv.1.4 (B20));  very occasional manicules;  evidence of early manuscript signatures;  18th-century number in pencil “f31” on verso of front free endpaper.
Decoration: On 1/2r a nine-line initial “R” is supplied in purple with grey tracery, infilled with green and blue foliage on a red background, and set on a square gold ground;  foliate borders in the same colours decorate the inner, upper, and outer margins of the same page and a painted coat of arms occupies the blank upper half of the page - see Provenance above;  principal initials supplied in red with reserved white, or in blue with reserved white;  smaller initials and paragraph marks throughout supplied in alternate red and blue;  guide-letters visible throughout.
Imperfections: Wanting the first and final blank leaves.
