William Hunter (1718-1783), physician and anatomist:  purchased by Hunter at the La Vallière sale through his agent, Jean-Baptiste Dessain, for 85 livres 15 sous;  see 'Dessain-Hunter correspondence' (University of Glasgow Library, MS Gen. 36, f.5v).

Note: Hunter apparently had a second copy of this edition, which he purchased through his agent, Jean-Baptiste Dessain, for 71 livres 11 sous at the Gaignat sale - lot 416 in Guillaume de Bure, 'Bibliographie instructive:  supplément ... ou catalogue des livres de feu M. L.J. Gaignat', 2 vols (Paris: 1769);  see 'Dessain-Hunter correspondence' (University of Glasgow Library, MS Gen. 36, f.25r).   However, the binding of that copy is described in the sale catalogue and in the 'Dessain-Hunter correspondence' as “m. c” (i.e. citron morocco);  it is no longer in the Hunterian Library.
Binding: France, 18th-century red goatskin decorated with triple gold fillets, a small gold fleuron at each corner;  gold-tooled spine;  marbled endpapers;  gilt-edged leaves;  front flyleaf has watermark of a bunch of grapes, and rear flyleaf the initials “L G”.   Size:  406 x 300 mm.
Leaf size: 393 x 288 mm.
Annotations: Very occasional marginal annotations in a 15th/16th-century hand;  very occasional evidence of early signatures.
Decoration: Eight-line initial “T” on 3/1r (f.17r) supplied in red and blue and reserved white, with red and blue pen-work decoration;  an eight line initial “U” on 3/2r (f.18r), a six-line initial “A” on 6/9v (f.55v), and a six-line initial “H” on 10/1r (f.79r) are supplied in red and blue and reserved white;  other initials throughout supplied in red or blue;  paragraph marks in red or blue throughout;  capital strokes in yellow throughout;  rubric titles supplied in red throughout;  running book numbers in red and/or blue roman numerals throughout.
Imperfections: None.
