Our policies

We are guided in our work by internal University policies and guidance from our professional body, the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS).

Our current operational policies are set out below.

Advertising vacancies

Our vacancies system is free for the use of all legitimate employers. However, we will not advertise vacancies that:

  • operate on a commission basis—all vacancies must have a salary
  • contravene UK National Minimum Wage requirements
  • are only open to male or female students, unless the vacancy has an exemption under the Equality Act
  • discriminate in any way (eg age, race)
  • are placed by an agent and do not name the recruiting client

Please also note:

  • International students cannot work in a self-employed capacity under the terms of their student visa.
  • Vacancies advertised as part-time must not exceed 20 hours per week during term time.
  • Employers offering summer internships and summer work must be aware that students start back at university in September.
  • Your advert should not contain statements to the effect of 'candidates must have permission to work in the UK.' This is considered discriminatory under UK law. You are advised instead to note that 'the successful candidate must, by the start of employment, have permission to work in the UK.'

Recruitment agencies

Careers, Employability & Opportunity deals with private agencies or third parties representing employers only where:

  • an employer has commissioned the agency to act on its behalf and the agency states which employer it represents, provides information about and selects only for the named employer
  • Careers, Employability & Opportunity is satisfied that such representation is clearly in the interests of students and of the University
  • the employer is named in the vacancy entry and made available to the student/graduate
  • salary information is provided and should not be commission based/have a commission element
  • the only web link included is to the employer's own site

Should you wish to use our shared vacancies service, the above principles are applied in all university careers services, and only vacancies that comply will be released to our websites.

Social media and web services moderation

Monitored hours

Our social media channels and other web services are monitored during the University’s standard Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:00.

We aim to respond to all online enquiries within 24 hours.

We do not monitor our online services during weekends or University/public holidays. We will respond to any enquiries as soon as possible after our return.

If you find inappropriate content on any of our social media channels outside of normal opening hours, please report this using the social network’s built-in tools, or contact the website’s moderator.

Moderation guidelines

We want all of our users to feel comfortable and safe when using our online services. We will actively moderate or remove user messages where the content:

  • is racist, sexist, homophobic, abusive or considered likely to offend other users
  • contains excessive swearing or other offensive language
  • links to inappropriate content elsewhere
  • advertises a commercial service without the explicit consent of Careers, Employability & Opportunity
  • is considered to be spam, repetitive or off-topic

Users posting such content will be informed of their misconduct and given a warning.

We will ban users who:

  • repeatedly post content falling into the categories outlined above
  • post an aggravated example of any of the above
  • post illegal content

We furthermore reserve the right to lodge a formal complaint with any appropriate authorities.
