LGBTQ+ Staff Network
Hello and welcome
We are a voluntary, community-led group open to all employees of the University who identify as LGBTQ+, including students who may also be staff.
If you’re on a permanent, fixed-term, short-term, agency or part-time contract and are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual, or non-binary, this network is for you!
We exist to provide a safe, welcoming space for sharing lived experience, providing peer support and championing inclusion and equality for staff.
Our purpose is to influence institutional culture, challenge discrimination, and improve the environment for LGBTQ+ colleagues across the university.
Interested?
To find out more, check out our Terms of Reference 2026.

What we do
The Network was founded in 2007, one of the first in Scottish HE, and we aim to provide an inclusive, welcoming environment in which members can:
- Meet regularly for networking and social events
- Provide and receive peer support
- Inform action that improves the LGBTQ+ staff experience at the University of Glasgow
- Support Co-Chairs to provide formal input and representation to the University’s LGBTQ+ Equality Group, Equality & Diversity Unit and senior management

Simone
Hello, I am currently Professor of Responsible and Interactive AI in the School of Computing Science, based in the Sir Alwyn Williams Building. My spouse and I moved to Glasgow at the end of 2021 and we feel about settled in now. I have a long history of being involved in LGBTQ+ issues: I was on the Lesbian & Gay Advisory Committee of the National Communications Union (back in the dark ages when there was no LGBTQ+, NCU merged later into the CWU). I was also a Lesbian Avenger and fought and campaigned on immigration cases based on sexuality. I stand firmly with our Trans colleagues. When I am not working, I enjoy doing boring stuff like gardening and walking up hills. You can reach me via the Network or at Simone.Stumpf@glasgow.ac.uk
Nick
Hi, I'm Nick, a lecturer in Russian and I research queer experiences of spirituality & religious institutions in the School of Modern Languages & Cultures. I'm really pleased to be part of the Network and hope it can effectively serve your needs. With that in mind, inital feedback indicates LGBTQ+ staff feel we need to better represent our views to University management, so this is something we'll work on. My door is always open to receive feedback so drop me an email at nick.mayhew@glasgow.ac.uk if there's ever anything you'd like to discuss, report, vent, etc. I know from personal experience that it can be tricky to navigate LGBTQ+ issues that arise at work and hope the Network can help.
Jonathan
Hi, I'm Jonathan, Assistant Director, Student Services. I've been at the university since 2012 in a variety of roles across External Relations and Student & Academic Services and am here to support the Network, raising awareness of the large LGBTQ+ staff community and the value we all bring to life at UofG. Outside of work, I have a life-long interest in sport and physical activity and I enjoy travel, reading (fiction, current affairs, history), design, film, socialising and getting outdoors. I look forward to working with , and all of you to refresh and invigorate the Network. You can find me in the Fraser Building, on Teams or via email at jonathan.jones@glasgow.ac.uk

Are you a student who isn’t an employee?
UofG Students who aren’t an employee should contact the LGBTQ+ Student Association, affiliated with the University's Students' Representative Council (SRC).
You can also contact the SRC for advice and support on LGBTQ+ issues, find out more about campaigns or find your rep.
The SRC Advice Centre is also a great source of information and support on a wide range of topics.
A non-Network staff member but need support?
If you wish to speak to someone confidentially and receive support/advice about any LGBTQ+ issue (this may include any experiences of homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying and harassment), please contact the Network or the Equality & Diversity Unit.
Homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying and harassment support is also available from the University's Respect Advisers Network (a number of whom have received LGBTQ+ Allies training).
